A new venture – Madhubala
She stood looking out of the window, the storm raged outside, it was no less than the storm that raged within her.
Only a few days ago she had been musing…..
What had she agreed to? She never wanted to be part of this world, she had always been in the background and now she was going to be on screen! But she had no choice, to save her husbands reputation, his everything she was prepared to do anything.
“Madhubala…”.Mehul watched her closely. Smiling as he saw how nervous she was. Walking towards her he smiled. “you are a natural , you have no need to be nervous.”
“Haan! Biwi I am right with you, why do you need to be nervous at all.”
“RK perhaps that’s why I am more nervous, so much is riding on this film being a success.”
A branch flew and smashed on the window pain, bringing her back to reality. She had done all that and more..much, much more. And what had she got in return? Quite a lot, she thought with a tearful smile, more than she had ever imagined. After working her guts out, making the film a success, he had heaped accusations upon her head, such false accusations and lies. In that moment her world had crumbled around her.
They had cut her to the core….losing her baby was bad enough but how could he have accused her of trying to get rid of it so that she could become a superstar! Hadn’t she told him countless times that she didn’t want to be a superstar?…She never sought the limelight. Throughout her childhood she had seen countless people succumb to the glitter and glow but she knew those dreams always came at a price. Her own sister Trishna had spent her entire life dreaming of hitting it big, always dreaming but never did it turn to reality. That false, bitter, fake world had never been her dream. But she had embraced it..for him, for RK her love, she had put up with it all. Paabo, Dipsy, Ma…the constant taane…all and for what? Nothing it seemed. Why had she put up with it for so long? Because she loved him, with all her heart. Not all his super stardom, his sarcastic remarks, but the real Rishap, the man that she had glimpsed. Vulnerable, intense, passionate, yes, that man, she loved him with all her heart, but it seemed now he had never loved her. That’s why he believed everything everyone s else had said and not her…
Dashing the tears from her face she decided that she wasn’t going to cry any longer, and definitely not for him. Picking up her mobile she rang Bittuji.
“Bittuji please arrange an appointment to see Mr Steve again, this time I wish to explore his ideas and the script.”
“But bhabhiji? Chief?”
“Bittuji he …” what could she say..Bittuji knew the state of play between them. “I am not with ..RK I am at home. Chawl mein..any way, just arrange the appointment to see him.”
“But bhabhiji you said you didn’t want to do it?” Bittuji frowned, had RK really let her go? The best thing that had ever happened to him. And he had let go, he shook his head in disbelief.
Head head high, she glared back at her reflection in the rain splattered window, “Now it seems I have no choice..anyway RK has accused me of so many things…I might as well prove him right!”
Bittuji smiled into the phone, a tear escaped his eye, he was so happy that she was fighting back.
“Right away! I will arrange the appointment right away! And I am with you all the way.”
Why were the nights always the longest? His hand reached out to the cold empty space where she was usually curled up.
Why had he even said that when he knew that there would be no answer. Hadn’t he watched her go himself, even helped her along by suggesting that she should ask the driver to drop her.
Completely giving up on trying to sleep he struggled out of bed and went to the window. The storm was fierce, rain slashed at the windows, it was seemingly relentless. Just like his taane and misconceptions. He was his own worst enemy he knew. Even as he had said those to things to Madhu he had realised that what he had said was completely and utterly untrue. The look…the look on her face, the pain, the hurt he had caused with his barbs had cut her to the core. He couldn’t even take them back, because he knew he could never put right what he had done to her. It was best if he let her go.
He had to… he loved her too much to keep hurting her, and that what he did best, hurt people. He knew no other way. This wall he had built around himself since childhood only she had been able to breach. But as soon as he had watched the reaction to her film..and yes it had been totally hers, he hadn’t been able to stop that animal from rising within himself. He had to let her go…he knew RK was not a nice man…and he could never be Rishab….the world, the screen had no respect for Rishab…it only knew RK. He had to let her go …he loved her more than himself. Rishab loved her but RK….RK wouldn’t let that love live.
Turning back from the window, he glanced around at moonlit room, so empty without her. He stared at his untouched glass of whisky, damn, why could he still smell her fragrance everywhere. It was everywhere, in his room, his house…her fragrance was everywhere. He had a good mind to have the place fumigated! But as he caught his image in the mirror he realised there was no way he would ever be able to get rid of her fragrance from his heart, his soul. She had seeped into him completely.
A smirk lit his face as he slumped into his favourite red chair. The RK in him is going to hate what he knew she would do next, perhaps he could admire..a little..her never say die attitude, after all RK was exactly like that, but the Rishab in him loved her for it. The Rishab in him wanted her to fly high…higher than he had ever flown.
Once again as she had left he had seen again the glimpse of the woman she was before he married her. The woman who had the audacity to slap him in front of his whole studio, the woman who had set the police on RK. The woman who had defied him at every step until the burden of her loyalties had her bowed to him. Now she had none of those burdens in her life, in her eyes he had once again glimpsed that woman she had been.
He was looking forward to the fight now….on an even keel…Madhubala against RK….. on screen. And eventually Rishab may be able to win her back…he loved her of that there was no doubt, he loved her enough to let her go. Would she eventually still love him enough to see that? His hands closed around the whisky glass and in the moonlit room he raised his glass to her …To Madhubala…ahaan!
