Madhubala a new venture- part 3
“RK I cant find out anything about the backers except that the finance solid. Perhaps the backers will come to the film premier night. I have heard rumours that there is one party who is especially interested. Madhu has outclassed everyone.”
Glaring at Bittuji, RK curled his lip. “Then we will have to go, anyhow she is my biwi still, I should go to the premier. And yeh Madhu Madhu kya hai? Bhabhiji bolo!”
“Aap ko aab yaad aaya?” Bittuji muttered under his breath ignoring his bhabhiji comment. “But RK are you sure you want to go, I mean it will be a little awkward.” He really didn’t want RK to create a scene at the premier after Madhu had worked so hard throughout the year. He had seen edits of the film and Madhu was looking absolutely fantastic in the film.
Picking up a glass of whisky from a nearby table RK looked deeply into amber liquid. Rishap wanted to go, he wanted to see her smile, walk through the same air and breath in her fragrance. He wanted to see the phenomenal turnout of fans , which undoubtedly there would be for her. She had conquered the film world and the hearts of her fans.
But the RK in him replied “Bittiju, you know how it goes, she may have succeeded in this venture by herself, and why not, biwi hai tou meri na?”
“She didn’t succeed on your merits but her own, all on her own!” Bittuji’s tone was sharp.
Taking a leisurely sip, RK looked up at him, “Come now Bittuji, where did she learn it all from? I taught her everything she knows.”
“And you really believe that?” Bittuji watched his Chief’s face for any signs of emotion, there was not one iota of a flicker except a slight flush on his cheeks that gave him away.
“Madhu has accomplished in one year what others in the industry don’t achieve in a lifetime. I am very proud of her.”
“You always did take her side.” RK’s eyes homed in on Bittuji, his tone accusing.
“If you had taken a moment to see, I was on BOTH your sides, until that is, you let her walk out of this house.”
“She walked out on ME!”
“You let her! The best thing that ever happened to you, you let her go!”
“She wanted to go.” His tone was indignant.
“You made her life so miserable she had no choice. She gave you so many chances but at every turn you burned your hopes.”
Yes he had, hadn’t he. He had burned his own house down.
“RK ke liye RK enough hai! I don’t need anybody else!” He exclaimed suddenly not wishing to go down this route again. He downed the rest of his whisky in one. “And remember you still work for me, get me into that premier!”
Bittuji looked at his chief with pity for a moment and then decided maybe it would be good for him to really see the Madhubala effect.
“But of-course Chief, have I ever let you down?” his tone dripped with sarcasm.
RK glared at Bittuji’s retreating back, “Saale sab ‘divas’ ho gaye hai!”
One more week to go before the premier. Her outfits had been tried and selected. Everything was ready. Steve was very excited about the launch. Anyone who was anyone in the industry was reported to be coming to see the film. She felt excited and very nervous at the same time. last time they had loved her work, but this time there was no RK at all in the film, would she be able to carry it off all on her own?
The phone suddenly rang startling her out of her thoughts.
“Glycerine! I am so excited! I have been to the venue with Sweetuji!”
“Haan that’s my nickname for him, he hates it!” Laughed Roma. “Well anyway Glycerine its fabulous, Steve said everyone will be there. You are going to looking stunning in that outfit. I am sure HE will be there too, I am going to do the lungi dance all around him!”
Madhu giggled, Roma was incorrigible. “It doesn’t matter if he is there, he is no longer part of my life.”
“What do you mean glycerine! Of-course it matters! I want to see his eyes fall out of his head! And well I can tell you if he comes with a bimbo hanging on his arm I am going to kick him where he deserves.”
“Roma you will do no such thing!” She hoped he wouldn’t come to her film premier with another woman, it would be the last straw. But really you couldn’t put it past RK, she had come to terms with it now. She wasn’t going to let him ever hurt her again.
“Anyway I don’t want to talk about him, how is everyone at home?”
“They are all fine. Ok Glycerine I have to go, I cant wait to see you in that outfit! You’re going to knock everyone dead! Chalo Sweetuji is calling me…Sweetujiiiiii I’m coming!”
Madhu heard Bittuji growl, “Paagal aurat! Stop calling me that!”
“You know you love it…..” Roma’s voice trailed off as Madhu cut the call with a smile. She looked down at the park and saw there was a snow fight going on with some kids. Suddenly feeling exhilarated she quickly donned her warms things and went out to join them.
Where did she go from the window? His eyes strained as he looked up. Maybe she went to get something to eat, he stood in the bitter cold and waited for her to reappear at the window, gasping in surprise and turning his back to her quickly as she walked out of the main doors walking towards him with a huge grin on her face.
He watched as she walked on in the snow smiling at the children as they sped past her throwing snowballs in all directions. Unable to help himself he walked in her footsteps, smiling at how they small and dainty they seemed. Had she seen him? He glanced out of the corner of his eyes, no…she couldn’t have if she had that grin wouldn’t be still there.
So much had changed for him in the last year too. He had been able to shed his pretend life with his faked death and go back to his own life. His information about the underworld had been invaluable to the CBI, for awhile he had’d to vanish. But now he didn’t need to hide. If he had been able to tell her then would it have mattered to her? Would she have left that sorry excuse of a man for him? Many a times he had seen something in her eyes for him, had it been just friendship? Could it have been more?
Suddenly a snowball hit him square in the face an expletive burst from him as the snow burned his eyes.
“Sorry mister!” a young boy shouted with grin.
Madhu turned in surprise as she heard the Hindi expletive. The man was a few yards away, wiping his face and his eyes especially. Something familiar about him struck her, she watched him as he struggled to get the snow out of his eyes.
No it couldn’t be?
She walked up to him as he managed to wipe his eyes and looked straight at her.
Her world started spinning…
“But you…re dead!”
He stared back, she wasn’t meant to discover him like this!
“I saw you die?” She muttered in a strange disconnected voice and then fainted away into a heap at his feet.
“Madhu!” Reaching down he scooped her off the ground into his arms. “Madhu! Wake up!”
He strode towards her building.
“Oy mate!” The security man called out as he purposefully walked towards the lifts with his precious burden held high against his chest. Then he saw who it was, “Oh sorry Sir, I didn’t realise its you.” he said with some deference. “Oh! What happened to Ms Madhoo?”
The lift arrived and Mrs Clarke stepped out hanging on to a very excited barking Buttons. “Oh Madhoo! What happened?”
“She fainted.” he replied in terse tones, why was everybody suddenly a busybody.
“Fainted?” Mrs Clarke peered at him suspiciously, she didn’t think Madhoo was the type to faint willy nilly. “I will come up with you.”
“She looks as if she is coming around.”
“Errr Mrs Clarke,” The security man said theatrically, “this is Mr Shekhawat, Aryan Shekhawat of Aryan Industries…you know the man who owns this building and many around here.”
Madhu opened her eyes and stared up at the very familiar face.
Shekhawat yeh kaun hai?
No this was Sultan! So why was the security man calling him something else altogether?
