Maan turned and shouted to Jaspal sir.
“Sir go back to the road call the police here, and my assistant Adi too, we will be fine from here!”
Jaspal sir nodded and turned back to the road.
Gullus ran fast, Chandu at his heels.
“Stop! Stop at once!” He bellowed, as he watched the two men take the girl away.
Pandey grinned at the sight of the overgrown school boy running after him. “Move it Patel and don’t try any tricks!”
Babli was coming around she wiggled on his shoulder. “Put me down you bad man!” But Patel kept a tight hold of her, she was his only ticket out of here, his plan had gone completely pear shaped!
“Didi! I am coming!” Chotu shouted as he ran towards them behind Maan.
Patel and Pandey reached the main tarmacked road. Pandey gestured for Patel to walk up ahead whilst he stood back a little hiding behind a tree, his gun pointed to where he thought Maan was going to come out any moment.
Gullus saw them vanish at the end of the path, he realised they were heading towards the road, “Chandus u keeps after hims froms heres, I wills go arounds that ways!” He crept up through the bushes and peered out, Patel was standing practically in the middle of the road, struggling with Babli who was trying to kick him and hit him at the same time, she raised her head and spotted him.
“Psssstt….pssstttt little girls donts worrys I ams police officers!” Gullus whispered to Babli
“O!” Babli mouthed, he looked very strange in a little boys uniform.
“In disguises!” offered Gullu as way of an explanation.
Patel suddenly twigged Babbli had gone all quiet. “Whats going on?” He turned suddenly looking behind him, Gullus vanished back into the bush. Babli started struggling again and Patel was just about to turn when Geet came speeding from around a corner.
“Babli!” she shrieked breaking into a run towards them. Chandu appeared from the rough track next to Geet.
“Didi! Put me down Put me down! You bad Maan!” Babli screamed.
Maan came running out of the bush into the road Chotu right after him. Patel stood in the middle holding Babli, surrounded be Geet, Chandu and Chotu. They had him hemmed in. Babli was now fihting in earnest and patel was finding it hard to keep a hold of her.
“Where is the other man?” Maan questioned his eyes not finding him.
Pandey grinned, “kya baat kya baat, the whole family was here! I am here!” He declared.raising his gun and stepped out from behind the tree.
“Maan Singh Khurana! Well finally ! Its been so long, I never thought I would get to you this quickly.”
Maan started at the beggar, who was he?
“Shocked? You don’t recognise me? Tsk Tsk Tsk…you don’t seem to have given me much thought at all, whilst I have been thinking of every minute of every day how I could make you suffer. Suffer like you have never suffered!”
Maan peered at him, who was this man? His voice sounded familiar, he looked at him carefully, under those bedraggled unwashed clothes and the dirty beard, something familiar struck him.
Then he saw the dried blood on the wound on his thigh. Pandey? Was it really Pandey. This Thing?
“Pandey?” his eyes narrowed and he growled, his fists clenched. He looked around at Geet and the children, Pandey was so unpredictable, he would try to hurt anyone and everyone!
“Haan Pandey! Did you think I had died? Well let me tell you I am not far from it. YOU and your Geet have reduced me to this, this beggars state! I have eaten rats, birds and even dogs, anything that has come along….anything that would keep me strong enough so I can take my revenge on you!” he said walking towards them.
Chotu screwed up his nose putting out his hand to make him stop, “ Areey you smell bad mister! Keep back!” Pandey glared at him waving the gun in his direction.
Maan stepped in front of Chotu, “Well Pandey what do you want to do now?”
Pandey laughed a horrible wretched laugh that sounded like metal grating on this quiet lonely road.
“I am going to kill you of-course. I don’t know how this idiot Patel did it but he has managed quite a coup. I am so grateful to him, you just dont know. I am going to enjoy making you suffer then I will kill you first then the rest.”
Maan looked at Pandeys small pistol with some disbelief.
“Rest assured I have plenty of bullets to kill you all, and this time I am not going to start with Geet but you, you always get in my way! Then I am going to kill Geet and these two, but I make Geet suffer first, oh yes!” he scanned Geet, “Oh yes I am going to enjoy it! The kids are a bonus!” .” He said pointing the gun at Babli and Chotu. “Yes, that will be a nice gift from me to you daadima!”
Rage filled Maan, he stepped forward but Geet’s pained exclamation stopped him. He gave her a reassuring glance.
A rumbling noise had them all looking around behind Pandey, it sounded like a truck was approaching.
“Ohhhh good, some transport at last! Let me sort my escape out first! Get back!” He gestured with his gun for Maan and all of them to step back into the side.
Reluctantly Maan stepped to the side his eyes focused on Pandey. Geet, Chandu and Chotu fell back too.
“Patel you come here! And bring the girl with you! Now!”
Patel stared at Pandey’s evil looking gun, putting Babli down he dragged Babli with him to Pandey. “Err Pandey don’t hurt me! I have been your loyal servant for so long.”
“Huh! Yeah thats why you gave me the wrong name for where you were! Patel I wouldn’t trust you as far as I could throw you!” Pandey grabbing Babli and pulling her in front of him.
“Maan Singh! If you so much as twitch I am going to kill this girl!”
Maan growled, he couldn’t risk Babli getting hurt, already she had a huge bruise on her face. His eyes narrowed at Patel, who blanched at the dangerous intent in Maan’s gaze.
Babli tried to pull away…’When did you last wash? Ewwww!”
“As pretentious as your sister eh! She also thought she was too good for me, well lets see who gets the last laugh.” Pandey laughed.
The sound got louder and they saw a truck coming towards them. “Now shut up, don’t any of you move!” as he saw them all inching forward, I thought suddenly struck him.
“Wasn’t there another boy with you all? Pandey questioned, glancing at the group, something didn’t seem right, but he didn’t have time to dwell on it. He stepped out on to the road, and waved his arms keeping one eye on them.
Balram stared at the man and child in the road. “Array! Stupid man! Get off the road!” Balram tooted his horn loudly, again and again.
But Pandey didn’t move, holding Babli fast.
Balram had to stop or run him over. He stopped getting out of the truck with a scowl and a few juicy gaalis on his lips.
The first person he set his eyes on was Chandu. “OYY! What are you doing here I have your order. I want my money, where is your slow brother, didn’t bring him today?”
Chandu stared at him. What was he supposed to do? If he came out as a police officer Pandey would shoot him. Where was Gullu?
“Shut Up!” Pandey said pushing Babli away, she ran straight to Geet. Pandey waved the gun menacingly at Balram. “Get over there!” He said gesturing for Balram to get close to the others. Balram turned and saw Geet, then Maan, and then the kids.
“OYY what are you all doing here?”
“SHUT UP!” Pandey shouted, “ you can ask your stupid questions later! Now throw me the keys.”
“Keys?” Balram scratched head, he didn’t have any keys.
Completely fed up with the moron, Pandey pointed and shot near Balram’s feet.
Balram screamed like an opera singer. “Arrey babaji, I have been shot! I am dying! Geet your uncle is dying!”
Everybody groaned, and rolled their eyes. Maan edged forward as he saw Pandey was distracted.
“SHUT UP you fool you are not even hurt!” Pandey shouted his fear increasing tenfold as he saw Maan was not staying back.
“KEYS for the TRUCK!”
“ Th…They are in the truck! Haven’t got them!”
“Oh good! Now I can get on do this!”
With a huge evil smile on his face, Pandey raised his gun at Maan and pressed the trigger. There were screams from Geet, Chotu and Babli, But his rusty gun didn’t fire again, it coughed slightly, and a small puff of smoke appeared at the end of the barrel. Pandey screamed in frustration and bashed it against a tree as he saw Maan smile and walk towards him with purpose.
Gullus who had been watching all this saw what was going to happen, vanished back into the bush and ran for all his worth around emerging straight in between Pandey and Maan just as Pandey raised his gun and fired again.
The shot hit Gullus right in the chest. His little body felled to the ground with the force. Chandu ran to his boss with a scream.
Pandey and Balram stared at Chandu, why had he called this demented overgrown boy Sir?
Maan screamed launching himself at Pandey just as Pandey was trying to reload his gun. He felled Pandey to the ground, grabbing the gun, for a moment he wanted to shoot him dead there and then, but he was not a murderer, he threw the gun far out of the way. Pandey fought for all he was worth but he was in no condition to take Maan’s punches.
Rage took over Maan as he thought about all Pandey had done to Geet and was now promising to do to the children and daadima. He beat him down into the ground. Pandey screamed in pain, but Maan’s blows were unrelenting.
As soon as Geet saw Maan was Ok she launched herself at Patel , both Babli and Chotu joined in, “You bad man! You hurt my sister! Take that and that!” Chotu shouted hitting Patel everywhere he could reach.
“I am not a bad man!” Patel screamed lying on the floor squirming. “I wouldn’t have hurt you I only wanted the money!”
“Shut up!” Geet shouted. She grabbed a large stone from the roadside, “Babli, Chotu if he so much as moves hit with this,” she ran to Gullus side where Chandu was crying his heart out. She saw Maan had pinned Pandey down and was busy tying him up with Pandey’s own torn scarf.
“Is he badly hurt?” Her eyes filled, Gullus was quite a character, she had a soft spot for him after the singing event at Auntyji’s house where he had made her laugh so much.
Gullu sir is dead!
“He is dead! Chandu wailed holding Gullus body tightly against his chest. “Dead! Gullus Sir you were the besttttttttttttt!” Chandu wailed.
“Dead? Oh!” Geet sank to the floor beside them her heart breaking. She was totally shocked! No not Gullu!
“Idiots I ams not Deads!” said a small voice.
“He is calling to me from heavennnnnnnn!” Chandy wailed.
Gullus stirred, pushing against Chandu. “Lets go offs me you idiots!”
Chandu stared down tearfully at the Gullu who had opened his eyes. “ SIR! SIR! You are alive!”
“Not fors much longers if you donts lets me breathes!” Gullus struggled up.
“There is blood on your shirt!” Geet exclaimed.
“Its onlys a scratches, ” Gullus said bravely trying to make light of it. He dug into his top pocket and pulled out his thick wallet and badge. He flicked it open and there was a picture of Gulabo with some of the bullet squarely stuck in her forehead. The rest looked like had broken up and injured him. Gullus smiled and kissed the picture,
“My Gulabos saved mes!”
A smile broke out on Geet’s face at the love she saw in his face for his beloved Gulabo’s, she threw Maan a loving glance, once again he had saved the day, but he was still busy with a struggling mad Pandey.
Gullus struggled up swaying a little.
“Sir! Please sit down, you are injured!” Chandu tried to push him down.
“CHANDU’s Idiots arrest thems! Donts worries about mes!” Gullus bellowed as he saw Balram and Patel were trying to sneak off.
Staggering up he pulled out handcuffs from his shorts and clamped them on Balram. “You ares under arrests!” Whilst Chandu ran after Patel and clamped handcuffs on him too.
“You? You? Slow school boy?”
“I am Police Inspectors! Idiots, under covers! You are unders arrests for sellings illegal Alcahols whichs is makings people sick!”
Gullus swayed. Geet reached out. “Inspector Gullus you had better sit down.” she said glaring at her criminal uncle, guiding Gullus to sit down, just as Maan dragged a completely defeated Pandey and threw him at Gullus and Geet’s feet.
“You wills go aways a long times!” Gullus grinned at Pandey.
Chandu escorted a very voluble Patel back, he was ready to do any deals and wanted to testify against Pandey, just as more constables arrived in several Jeep’s along with Jaspal sir, Adi and Pinky following in a car.
Maan went and sat in front off Gullu, as the constables dragged away Pandey and Chandu attended to Patel and the details.
“Inspector Gullu you saved my life! How can I ever thank you?”
Geet agreed. “Haan Inspector Gullu we can never thank you enough!”
Gullu smiled a weak smile. The wallet had stopped the bullet completely going into his chest but he still had been injured by the shrapnel. “Its my jobs!” He said with pride.
“Maan ssir..Geet oh you found Babli and Chotu! Thank god” Adi voiced his relief.
“Adi, Good you are hear, we need to take Inspector Gullu to a hospital.”
“Nahi nahi! I haves to go to my offices, we haves caughts master criminals Pandeys and also arrested the mens responsible for the Alcahols rings! I ams sures to gets my promotions Nows!” With that Gullus fainted right into Maans arms.
“Geet, I think he will be fine, he has lost blood but its not too bad,” Maan declared examining the wound.
Then he realised Geet was all dirty and her sleeve was torn.
“GEET! Sit down!” his eyes running over her doing his usual panic assessment.
“Maan calm down, I am fine! Lets get Gullu to hospital.”
Jaspal sir which is the best hospital in this district?” Maan questioned.
“I will take you, its not far.”
“Sir, one of the constables with go with you,” Chandu said to Maan, “the kids can ride in the Jeep along with you two.” he said pointing to Pinky and Adi.
Babli and Chotu grinned, “with the siren on!”
“Haan with the siren on, we have to get Gullus sir to a hospital quick!”
Maan carried Gullu to the car as Chandu took control of the rest. His eyes took in the children, they both were talking nineteen to the dozen to Adi and Pinky relaying their adventure. Geet although a bit dirty and scratched was OK. Jumping into the car and bundling the rest in the jeep, they drove off to the hospital.
He stared at the road his jaw set with determination. Now, to convince his stubborn Mishty about taking the children home. But first he was going to drum into her head that when he said stay put, he meant it!
