Screeching to a halt at home he jumped out of the car and went to hher side. She had already stepped out so he just took her hand and pulled her inside with him.
“Maan! The car door!”
“Leave it!” He rasped out still holding her hand firmly in his.
The sitting room was empty. Good, he wouldn’t have to answer daadima’s questions whilst he dragged her upstairs he thought.
“Maan let me go! I need some water!”
“Drink it upstairs in our bedroom.”
“But its six oclock? Why are we going upstairs?” She moaned as he tugged her upstairs along with him. “I have to find Nakul and see to the dinner.”
Ignoring her protests he pulled her into the bedroom and closed the door behind him with a firm click he stood collecting himself for a moment not trusting himself to touch her or say anything yet.
Geet glared back at him. He was standing so still. The tick in his jaw seemed to be jumping like a fly on a hot plate. Looking at him up and down she stared, he looked as if were about to explode. But she wasnt going to stand here why he gave a lecture.
“Hrump! I have no idea why you are so angry? I told you I was in no danger whatsoever.” She went to the cupboard and pulled out some fresh clothes. “The only danger there was the heat, I feel all sweaty and hot. If you had just let me come to the office when I said so I wouldn’t have had to stand out there. Now I am going to have a shower before I go down to see if Nakul has everything sorted for dinner.” Glancing at him once more with a determined angle to her chin she flounced away before he could say anything, closing the door of the bathroom behind her smartly.
Unable to even comprehend that she had walked away from him he glared at the space she had just been in.
“GEET!” The sound exploded out of him. He heard the shower start and a red mist clouded before his eyes.
“Come back here right now!” he called through the door. He tried the handle and to his enormous surprise it was locked. So she was running scared! And so she might his brain started to steam. There was no way she was going to run from this.
“I will there in a minute just let me finish!”
There was an all mighty crash and he stormed into the bathroom. She was already in the shower all soapy and wet.
“Geet! OUT!”His eyes blazed as the naked soapy vision of her swam before his eyes.
“Maan! Don’t be absurd! I said I will be out in a minute! Fiercely she glared at him but it was difficult to face him angrily without a stitch on!
Reaching into the shower he turned the lever on full blast so it washed the soap off her whilst with the other hand he grabbed a bath sheet and wrapped her in it like a mummy as soon as the soap had come off her body.
“Maan!” She squealed and wriggled unable to get her hands out of the tight cocoon as he lifted her out and strode into the bedroom dumping her into the middle of the bed.
“What’s your problem?” Indignantly she glared at him “I told you I was in no danger and I did call you!”
Hands on hips he glared down at her. “Have you any idea of what is dangerous? You run around as if you are invincible. Pandey and his men are not a joke, they are not some Bollywood stand in’s that would fall and faint if you slapped them. They are real criminals. They have hurt, maimed, stabbed and KILLED people!” He ground out each word trying to hammer it into her head. “And you! You of all people knows what Pandey wanted to do with you!” His hand went to his head as the image of her fighting off Pandey flashed into his mind.
“I KNOW that! That’s why I had to follow him to see where he was going. Don’t you see? Major Saab now has a better idea and if they can get hold of Shanker they will be able to catch Pandey and then Maan you will not have to worry. This all started because he wanted to hurt you!” She rose to her knees facing him like a tigress even though cocooned as she was she felt like a caterpillar.
“I can look after myself but you Geet, you are NEVER to that again do you hear me!” He was not giving in to her this time.
“As I said before its one rule for you and one rule for me! Maan get it into your head that I want them caught just as much as you do! I couldn’t bear to see you hurt Maan.” Her voice dropped to a whisper her eyes darkening at the every thought.
She looked so fierce, a goddess of strength and beauty even in just a bath sheet.
“And you think that I want to think about Pandey’s hands on you?” He leaned onto the bed, his hands reaching for her and pulling her towards him.
“To touch your skin to mark it with his filthy hands, to violate you, to kill you? Mishty!” His face contorted and looked so tortured. “I cant bear to see even one mark, one bruise on you.”
Her amber eyes settled on his pained face. She struggled out of her mummy wrapping, reaching up to stroke the pain away with gentle hand. “Maan if that applies to me, then that applies to you too. If anyone hurt you you think I could bear it? You think your Mishty would remain whole if half of her is in pain? You are my world Maan. I would go to the ends of the earth to protect you.”
“Mishty NO! You will not put yourself in danger ever again. I couldn’t bear it. You don’t know how I die inside a thousand deaths when you do that. Promise me!”
She took in his dark intense eyes, his pain, the tight grip he had on her arms. “Maan I promise to keep myself safe as possible , but I cant promise not to do everything in my power if I think you are in danger. Don’t ask me to promise that.”
“You are so stubborn! I should tie to the bed and keep you here.”
Flushing at the thought of being tied to the bed whilst Maan made love to her sprang into her mind like a tidal wave of want. It must have shown on her face because with a muttered groan of longing he pulled her hard against him and his lips closed over hers in a possessive, sensuous kiss that had clinging to him for more. His lips blazed a trail down her wet dewy skin tasting licking to her collar bone.
She had long given up on her bath sheet and as he moved it slid down her body to form a soft rippled puddle around her knees. She heard him suck in a heavy fractured breath and his eyes gleamed as his lips homed on a lush dark crowned breast.
“Maan! OH!” She threw back her head as he bent over his strong arm teasing, tasting and feasting on her.
“You drive me insane!” He rasped out loud. The heat that was engulfing both of them was volcanic.
She could here her heart thumping so loudly, it had been so long it seemed. But the thumping became insistent and they both stopped to catch their breath as it seemed to get louder.
“The door!” Geet gasped out.
Sucking in a deep tortured breath he leaned against her forehead for a second whilst he brought himself to control.
“Maan!” Daadima shouted through door with some urgency.
“Coming daadima!” He called out giving Geet time to scramble off the bed and into the bathroom to get changed.
“Maan! I have been knocking for ages!” Daadima admonished.
“Err I didn’t hear you!”
She glared at him, “Anyhow, Adi has been trying to reach you, but your phone is off. The men who have been at the station have seen Ajeet and the younger man with him only this afternoon. We need to go and see straight away.”
Geet came out of the bathroom and saw the serious nature of daadima’s face.
“Everything all right?”
“Chalo! Maan what are you waiting for?” Savitridevi asked urgently as she saw the hesitation in Maan’s eyes.
“Geet, Ajeet has been found! Come on lets go this time I am not going to let him slip out of my hands.”
Geet knew exactly why Maan was hesitating. She reached out and squeezed his hand as daadima turned and started walking off with a muttered oath about no sense of urgency.
“Maan whatever happens we will face it together.” She whispered quietly in his ear as they followed daadima out of the house into the car. He nodded acknowledging her need to help him but he had to face this alone. He couldn’t even began to tell her the sense of betrayal he knew he was going to feel if this really turned out to be his father.
Not a word was uttered in the car all the way to Tuglakabad. All three were in deep thought. Savitridevi an anxious mother just needing to find Ajeet as soon as possible she hoped the information was right. He had looked so ill last time. Maan steeling himself against all the emotions and anger he knew he would feel. And Geet torn between wanting to help, worrying about the both of them.
By the time they got to the station it was late. Maan had called Adi there and he was waiting anxiously with the man who had spotted Ajeet and the other man earlier.
“Where are they? Maan growled straight to the point.
“Satish knows he followed them to their rooms.”
“Sir they went off in that direction, I followed them and I think they are living in a rented room in a block of flats.”
“Chalo!”Savitridevi rasped show me the way.
“Err…” Satish hesitated looking at both the very well groomed ladies.
“Its not a nice part of town Maam. Err Sir you will be better off coming alone.”
“NO!” Savitridevi was insistent. “Young man don’t patronise me! I have lived a long time and have seen all aspects of life. I need to see him myself. Now, show us the way.”
Maan nodded to Satish and Savitridevi glared ferociously at the two of them.
Gulping with fright Satish realised why Savtridevi had built such a reputation in the business world, she was no meek daadima. Quickly jumping to action he led them along some narrow lanes and the area changed rapidly into a seedy run down place rife with low life. Maan walked in between daadima and Geet making his presence felt to anyone who dared to look. Women hung around doorways calling out for business, one jumped out and pulled Adi’s arm and he let out a scream of fright that had everyone grinning breaking into the deep tension for moment.
“Adi!” Maan growled at his antics.
“S…S…Sorry sir!” He sheepishly muttered.
“Maan don’t scare him, bechara is already troubled.” Savitridevi grinned.
They came to a block that looked like it was going to crumble any minute. “They are in here. Second floor, first room to your right.”
“Wait here.” Maan said, “Adi you stay with daadima and Geet.”
Savitridevi glared him and went into the building before Maan could do anything to stop her.
With a muttered oath he followed her in as she went up the rickety creaky stairs. Geet and Adi followed after him. Bollywood music blared out loudly from some where. Shouts and screams came from various places making Adi look around with a pensive glance. The smells that merged and reeked through the pores of the place had everyone gasping for fresh air.
Savitridevi reached the door and knocked loudly. Loud coughing could be heard from the other side.
Suddenly the door was yanked open and the young man she had seen in the pictures looked back at her in surprise.
“Kuan hai Anwar beta?” Questioned a feeble voice from the room. “If its the landlord tell him I don’t have any money, he can send whoever he wants to beat me up. Better to die now than a long lingering death.” More loud coughing could be heard.
Savitridevi baulked at the words. Pushing past the young man she went in herself to see if this feeble sounding pathetic creature was really her son. As her eyes accustomed themselves to the dingy yellow light in the room she saw the man lying in bed clutching dirty brown sheets in his thin frail hands.
Her face tightened with pain and her eyes filled and spilled over.
“Ajeet!” It was a croak. She swayed, Geet who had been right behind her caught her and held her firm.
Ajeet nearly jumped out bed to crow with delight. That look on his mothers face had been worth the days of starving, pain and fever he had suffered. Today had been the worst when he had to endure going to that station and pretend to work in his state. He knew his smart son would have people stationed around the areas to look for him. Pretending to be a coolie had given him an identity and a place where would be found. And damn it, had all been worth it. Now he had her right in his grasp, now he had her right where he wanted her. He was going to milk it for it was worth for a very very long time to come.
Schooling his face into a shocked surprised state he gasped out loudly “…..MAA!”
