“Maa?” Anwar questioned. His face a picture of surprise.
“Haan…Anwar beta this is your daadima..”.and seeing Maan and Geet “…that is your brother.”
Maan looked at his father and could not recognise him at all, but daadima was sure, so it had to be him. He gazed at his so called brother and found him wanting.
“….. And I don’t know who this lovely young lady is?” He said smiling at Geet.
Nobody replied to his question. The initial shock had turned into a mixture of emotions that weaved dark thoughts around them all. The condition Ajeet was in shocked them all. How had it come to this?
Maan stared hard at daadima..he was not really bothered about Ajeet but daadima’s pale face and shocked expression worried him tremendously. He couldn’t afford to let her get stressed out, it would undoubtedly effect her blood pressure. He needed to take charge of the situation.
“Satish, thank you for your help you can go now.” he dismissed.
“Geet tum daadima ko leke ghar jawo. Adi arrange for an ambulance so we can take errr.. Mr Khuarana to the hospital.” He really didn’t want to call him father.
“Beta?” Ajeet questioned Maan in a feeble voice. “Tumne mujhe Mr Khurana kyu kaha? I am your …father?”
Pursing his lips Maan didn’t answer. “This is not the time.” He quelled any further questions from all.
“Wait!” Anwar spoke making the most of the drama.. “I don’t know who this woman or he is?” Pointing to Maan “…And who are you to take charge of my father?”
“Anwar…Anwar beta, I told you this is your grandmother and this….”
“So why did you never tell me this before? I mean why?”
“Beta….I did such a terrible thing…having an affair with your mother and then abandoning Maan and his mother..and my mother..all my life I have hidden because I was so ashamed..so ashamed of what I had done.” Ajeet looked for reaction on each of their faces, it was essential that he played this with a lot of thought.
Anwar launched himself fully into the role now.“But you kept me away from my grandmother and my brother..” He went towards Maan with open arms. Maan gave him such a closed look he stopped mid distance.
“This is not the time to go into all this!” Savitridevi spoke at last after recovering herself somewhat. “Maan beta lets take him to hospital and do the necessary.”
“Maa! No I cant come with you. You must understand.” His eyes pleaded, he put his hand to his head he carried on. “Oh how I wish you hadn’t found me! I wish I hadn’t come back to Delhi.”
He was laying it on a bit thick Anwar thought. Any moment they would ask what he had been doing all this time.
“Ajeet I don’t know why you didn’t think you could come to me, your own mother if you were in trouble all this time.” Her eyes spoke of her pain of finding her son like this. “We will go into all that later. But now that I have found you, I cannot ignore you both and walk away. Of-course you must come home with us after we have had the doctors check you out properly.”
Maan looked at father and son and wandered who the anonymous tipper was that so conveniently given daadima all the information and whereabouts, he would definitely like to know that.
“Geet why don’t you go home and get things organised.” Daadima said.
“I will come with you.” Anwar said quickly jumping at the chance to go to luxury and also to be near Geet.
“No!” Maan barked. “You will come with us.” he didn’t trust either of them.
Anwar was about to argue when he saw the urgent signals from Ajeet to shut up and go with the flow.
“OK.” He agreed reluctantly. At least later he would be able to check out the Khurana mansion and sleep in a soft bed. He couldn’t wait but before he went along with them he had to make sure of his supplies first. “I just need to go to the landlord and tell him we are leaving…we are leaving aren’t we and going with daadima?”
Maan stared at him, a moment ago he was making such a drama now it was all daadima.
“Haan if Maa..is saying we must go home then we must. Beta Anwar but he will demand the rent..”Ajeet interjected feebly relived that his mother had made it clear that she could not ignore them, if it had been up to Maan he was sure that he would have left them to their fate.
Daadima nodded at Maan, with a dark look he pulled out his wallet. “How much rent do you owe?
Anwars eyes lit up seeing all the notes, “Errrr….” he was just about to say a ridiculous sum like fifteen thousand when Ajeet quickly spoke and said 2000 Rupees ignoring Anwar’s murderous expression.
“Two thousand?” Adi looked around the room with undisguised horror, “Its not even worth two hundred!” he muttered before turning to Maan and saying “Maan sir the ambulance is on its way.”
Maan nodded pulling out the notes he handed them over into the eager hands of Anwar.
“I will go and see the landord.” he said, exiting fast to find his supplier, but not before casting a surly look in Ajeet’s direction.
“Geet can you make arrangements for their bedrooms?” Daadima asked.
“Outhouse mein.” Maan growled looking at daadima, he wanted to set his boundaries here and now.
“Maan! Nahi they will stay in main house.” Looking him back straight in the eye Daadima firmly countered him.
“Tou Geet shift us to the outhouse.” Maan said with a hard glint in his eye. He really didn’t want to be anywhere near his Ajeet or Anwar.
Ajeet watched the interaction with interest. It was quite obvious that Maan was willing to do anything for his daadima, it was just as well he had her right where he wanted her.
“Maan!” Daadima was about to tell Maan but the look on his face stopped her. She realised and remembered he would need time to get himself together. She nodded to Geet agreeing to Maan’s request for the time being. Hopefully soon Maan would relent and come back.
Adi brought the ambulance men up and together they shifted Ajeet into the Ambulance, along with their meagre belongings but there was no sign of Anwar as they all went down.
“Geet you go with Adi back to the car. Can you manage that? Call me when you get there.” He was torn between making sure Geet was safely back and not moving from daadima’s side.
“Maan…”she softly said, “don’t worry, Adi and I will be fine, you just go along with daadima she will need all your strength and support.”
His dark eyes filled with love and emotion, looking down at her he caressed her with his eyes. She understood him so well. Her amber eyes reflected back his love, making the tight knot that had formed in his heart since seeing Ajeet ease a little. She nodded and he watched the two of them walk back in the direction of the car.
“Where is Anwar?” Ajeet questioned from inside the ambulance. He really hoped the idiot had gone and got himself high yet. Anwar was his ace card.
“Where does the landlord stay?” Maan looked around wondering where the idiot had vanished to, he just wanted to get out of here now.
“Errr…”Ajeet groaned wishing he hadn’t said that. If Maan went to the landlord and realised Anwar hadn’t gone there the plan would fail quickly. “Errr,,he lives…”
“He is back.” Daadima said seeing Anwar walk back from around a corner.
“Chalo!” Maan barked glaring at him. The ambulance started up and they all piled into a taxi that Adi had also called, following in its wake.
“Geet! Pinky almost shouted into the phone. Is it true?”
“Yes Pinky.” Geet replied in flat tones, she was so worried about Maan and daadima.
Recognising the pain her friends voice Pinky at once asked, “Shall I come there? Do you need help?”
“No I am ok.”
“Geet if you need me I am here.”
“Yes I know that Pinky.” Geet smiled into the phone I know you and Adi are always here for myself and Maan.
They drove in silence for a while until Adi spoke his thoughts aloud…”This will change Maan sir’s life completely!”
Yes, it would change all their lives, Geet thought as she looked out of the car window without seeing any of the Delhi traffic.
“Haan…Adi and Maan will need your support through all this.”
“Geet! You know I will do everything I can to help Maan Sir…you don’t have to even say that.”
Her eyes filled,” …I am sorry Adi..its just that …”she looked at him. He had stood with her through the Pandey ordeal along with Pinky, she knew he was a true friend of hers and for Maan he would do anything. The tears fell as she looked at him with a smile.
“Huh huh huh…”Adi laughed a nervous laugh. “Geet please don’t cry, nahi to mujhe bhi rona aa jayeenga!”
A small smile lit her face at his words, as he pushed up his glasses and blew his nose loudly.
“Thank you Adi.”
“Hhhhuhhh Mention not…mention not!”
Geet organised along with Adi’s and Nakul’s help two bedrooms at the end of the hall from daadima’s room. She had wished Maan had not insisted on moving to the outhouse, she had a feeling daadima would need her nearby.
“Err Mr Khurana your father is very dehydrated. We will need to keep him in for observation and to give him a saline drip tonight but he should be fine to take home tomorrow.”
Maan nodded to the doctor, signing the documents for the payments. Anwar and daadima sat in the hall outside Ajeet’s room as the nurses made him comfortable.
“Daadima its not serious, we should be able to take him home tomorrow. Now lets go home. “
“Haan beta, let me just go and say bye…” She said standing up and going into the room.
“Don’t you want to say goodnight to your father?” Maan quipped to Anwar, watching closely as a puzzled look came over his face for a second and vanished.
“Err yes..my father. I will go and say goodnight. Then we are going home right?”
“Yes.” Maan reluctantly confirmed. There was something about Anwar that he didn’t like. Was this really his older half-brother? As Anwar left him to follow daadima into the room. Maan allowed himself to slump down on the nearby bench with a thump. This all seemed too much to comprehend. Ajeet, Anwar …their lives had well and truly changed forever now. Did Ajeet really mean what he said? Maybe he was being too suspicious. Maybe it was as Ajeet had said he had felt so ashamed he didn’t want to return and then as the years passed it became impossible to. Damn it! Why was it so hard to give them the benefit of the doubt.
He watched daadima come out of the room she looked exhausted. He stood and went to her immediately, whatever his doubts and concerns were they would have to be secondary, he had to stand by and make sure daadima’s welfare remained number one at all costs.
Ajeet sank into the nice comfortable bed in the hospital room with a long sweet sigh as they all left. From tomorrow he would slowly work himself back into the family fold and start enjoying life he thought with a grin.
Adi left finally after telling Geet a dozen times to phone him if she needed his help. By the time Maan, daadima and Anwar got home daadima looked completely drained. Geet saw her and took her straight up to her room, making sure she ate a light supper before going to bed.
“Geet beta. Please look after Maan.” Daadima requested her eyes filled with concern.
“Daadima, don’t worry, we will all work this through together.” Crossing her fingers behind her back she said. “Dekhna everything will be fine soon.”
Savitridevi nodded finding Ajeet had been her one goal and now that she had realised that the battle was far from over, in-fact it had just begun.
Anwar’s eyes were like saucers, if he had realised his boss came from such a wealthy family he would have told him years ago to come back to Delhi. There were so many valuables just lying around, he went from object to object wondering how much coke he could get from selling it.
Maan sat on the sofa watching Anwar look around the house with great interest. Maybe moving to the outhouse was not such a good idea after all he thought, but he didn’t want to voice it out aloud in front of Anwar.
“Maan..err Anwar please come and have something to eat.” Geet said as she came down from daadima’s bedroom.
Anwar jumped up he couldn’t wait to tuck into good food. For the next hour Maan, Geet and Nakul watched with awe as Anwar ate and ate and had some more, the chef had to make everything four times before he was satisfied.
Pushing his own plate away hardly touched Maan watched him eat, the knot in his chest became tighter, if this was really his brother, then he had to make allowances for him. Ajeet had kept him in the dark about his family, it was not Anwar’s fault that he had grown up in poverty. Obviously now he was here, he would be entitled to enjoy everything a Khurana was entitled too. He wondered if Anwar had worked at all as anything other then a coolie. But looking at Anwar’s physique Maan puzzled he didn’t look very fit either, there was paunch about him that people who did that much physical work wouldn’t normally have. Yes, Anwar puzzled him a great deal. Troubled thoughts went round and round his mind.
Finally finishing with the loudest burp that echoed around the hall, startling Geet and making Nakul jump, he declared he was finished and wanted to go to bed as he was so tired. Geet took him upstairs to show him his room along with Nakul. Eventually Maan headed up to their room and found that Geet hadn’t moved all their things as he had requested.
In an automotive state he went into the bathroom and had a shower, trying to cleanse away his troubled thoughts. Hitching a towel low on his hips he come back into the bedroom to watch her come into the room like a breath of fresh air… “Geet how did you know that I had changed my mind?”
“Bas.. you think you are the only one who can read minds?” She grinned at him deliberately trying to keep it light. She walked up to him and slipped her arms around his warm naked torso raising herself on tip toes to plant sweet kisses on his face.
“Did you..”.he couldn’t being himself to say his brother just yet.
“Haan, Anwar is all settled into his room. Maan….” She was about to voice her concern about the wild look in Anwar’s eyes when he saw his face was filled with deep emotion.
“What would I do without you?” he rasped out. His eyes burned bright with love. His arms wrapped themselves around her tightly as he pulled her into him, hugging her tight letting himself revel in her softness, her sweet fragrance.
She felt his body tremble with the strength of feelings, his face expressed his troubled mind. But she knew what would help him, what would help them both.
“Maan kiss me!” She whispered and he needed no second bidding. His mouth closed over hers and he lost himself in her. The kisses became an outpouring of emotions from them both, as they fed on each other. He tumbled her on to the bed.
“Mishty I love you so much…I cant express how much you mean to me.” There was a slight tremor in his voice as he spoke softly to her.
“You don’t need to say anything, I can see it in your eyes, feel it in your kiss and your touch. Just love me.”
Then there was no need for words as their lovemaking became a feast of the senses, they kissed, touched and made love. In her arms he found the light, expelling the darkness from his mind. They took it slow undressing each other with deliberate care, taking maximum pleasure out of prolonging each sensation before they superseded it with another until nothing but the ultimate would do. As he joined them with a slow hard thrust whilst looking into her eyes he felt some of the pain ease. She was his strength. With her body, her touch and her soft sighs she healed him. Holding nothing back she gave him everything and more. He rasped her name out long into the night losing himself completely within her, forgetting everything beyond the realms of her arms. Exhausted physically and emotionally, they fell asleep locked in each others arms.
Along the corridor behind closed doors high on coke, Anwar jumped up and down on the soft bed with manic delight. He had struck gold this time…and that Geet, she was something else, oh yes he was going to enjoy himself here a great deal!
