Chap 19- What a morning!
Morning couldn’t come soon enough for Maan. Sandwiched between Geet and Adi he was wide awake the whole night whilst they all slept like babies. As soon as light started to filter into the room he crawled out of bed muttering curses on how the situation had become so dire. Glaring back at the bed he wondered how they could sleep so peacefully, he couldn’t wait to get back out of this mad place.
“Adi! Wake up!” he shook him.
Adi smiled and snored even louder. Muttering, “Stop Pinky…gud gudi hote hai!”
Growling with impatience Maan stalked out of the room to see if he could get a signal outside. The sun was just coming up in the distance, last nights storm had all but disappeared leaving the air feeling clean and fresh. He tried his phone again but still no signal, muttering to himself about how Geet got herself and him into such stupid situations he set off walking towards the road.
Geet suddenly woke up. Something was missing. She looked around, Pinky was fast asleep, turning she saw Adi was fast asleep. She sank back down…then suddenly sprang back up again.
“Adi wake up wake up! Pinky! Wake up wake up!”
“No Maan sir I don’t have that file.” Adi muttered, a frown on his sleeping face.
“ADI!” Geet shook him hard.
“Geet why are you shouting?” Pinky woke, sitting up in a daze.
“Maan is missing! ADI!” Geet shouted in his ear.
Adi jumped up in bed suddenly awake.
“K…Kyyaaa…K..kaun?” He looked around at Geet and Pinky. “Kyaaa?”
“Adi, Maan is missing!” Geet said, wide eyed and looking around frantically.
“Haan, I woke up a while ago and he was here now he is not!”
“BHOOOTTTTTTT!” Adi loudly whispered. “Sorry, I mean Mr Bhoot must have taken him.”
“Adi why would bhoot take him?” Geet questioned her mind racing with fear.
“Geet call him Mr Bhoot please he will get offended.” Adi whispered theatrically looking around the room with trepidation.
“Because Maan sir was the only one who didn’t believe him, so he must have taken him.” Pinky nodded vigorously agreeing with Adi.
Geet crawled out of bed. “Maybe he has gone to the bathroom…” saying that she slipped out of the room and went to look.
“Maybe he is hiding under the bed.”Adi whispered.
Rolling her eyes at the thought of Maan hiding under a bed from anyone or anything Geet cautiously opened the door and went out into the corridor.
After about half an hour of walking Maan came to a main road where there was a dhabba, a man was busy making morning tea.
“Excuse me…err is there a taxi service from here towards Delhi?”
The man looked him up and down..”Saab.. there could be….”
Maan’s eyes lit up. “have you got a phone here?” He was still getting no signal in this godforsaken place.
“No sir whoever wants a taxi calls them up sir.”
“How?”Maan stared at him.
“With their phone sir!” The man looked at Maan as if he was a bit slow in the head.
“Lekin there is no Signal here!! Maan growled.
“Ahhh…thats why I say there could be, we don’t really get many taxi’s here sir.” He said matter a factly. “Special chai sir?” the man offered him a cup.
Glaring at the man, Maan shook his head. “Sab ke saab paagle hai yaha.” he muttered. He looked at his watch, it was already nearing seven, they must have woken up by now. He decided to go back to the house gather them up and make them walk back to Delhi if required.
Geet looked all around the house Maan couldn’t be found anywhere, seriously worried she went back to the bedroom. Adi and Pinky were still sitting there looking positively too scared to get out of bed. Adi was shaking his head and pointing under the bed. And mouthing ‘Mr Bhoot??” For want of appeasing Adi she rolled her eyes and looked under the bed knowing there was no way Maan or ‘Mr Bhoot’ would be under there.
“See Adi there is NO one here..” she muttered and then stared hard as she spied a white sheet, broom handle and torch. Her brain whirred and then suddenly it clicked into place. She stood up straight as a ramrod. Her eyes narrowing as she recalled how last night Maan had so casually dismissed the Mr Bhoot.
“Kya hai Geet?” Adi asked , totally petrified by the mad look on her face.
“Err nothing Adi….”
Just then Mrs Chadhha appeared in the doorway. “What are you all up to? Wide eyed, she spied Pinky and Adi in bed and a shocked giggle broke from her.
“No..No its not like that!” Adi went bright red and jumped out of bed totally forgetting Mr Bhoot.
“Just came to tell you the phone is working if you want to order a taxi you can call now. Come down I have made breakfast for you all. Where is Maan?”
“That’s just it, he isn’t anywhere.” Geet muttered. Whilst Pinky leapt out of bed at the mention of food.
Maan briskly walked back to the house, he just turned the corner and saw it come into sight when a loud horn beeped him. Startled he turned to see a taxi drive up to the door.
Mrs Chadhha opened the door and waved at the taxi and then saw Maan walking up the drive after it with a totally frustrated and annoyed expression on his face.
“Geet your Maan is here.”
“Taxi? How did you call this taxi?” Maan growled totally furious at having wasted a whole hour of his morning.
“I told you yesterday the house fixes itself. They have all had their breakfast why don’t you eat something before you go.”
“Your phone is working?” He stared at Mrs Chaddha. He ran his hand through his hair in frustration. “err can I just make a call?” He was worried what daadima would be thinking although he had already told her last night before he had set off that they may get stuck.
“I have already called daadima to let her know we are OK.” Geet told him. “Thank you Mrs Chaddha for yesterday, especially helping us with those goondas, and thank the chickens too.”
“Arrey mention not, me and the girls haven’t had so much fun in ages.” Mrs Chaddha smiled. “But Geet there is trouble ahead please be very careful. Listen to Maan please…and Maan you too be careful.”
That was the most sensible thing to come out of this madness Maan thought as he saw Geet taking Mrs Chaddhas words seriously. “Shall we get going then? Thank you Mrs Chaddha for your hospitality, you have been more than kind.” He pointedly stared at the three of them to get into the taxi ASAP. Brushing past him Geet got into the taxi, he stared at her why was she glaring at him like that. Putting it out of his head he ushered Pinky and Adi and he told the driver to speed home as fast as possible.
Back at home………
“Chotu as soon as didi gets home you have to tell her!”
Chotu nursed his arm. “its not that bad, didi please don’t worry.” He reassured as he saw Babli’s pale unhappy face.
“But what if he does it again?” Babli pulled out a balm from the first aid kit and gently rubbed into Chotu’s bruise.
“I will be ready next time. They surprised me that’s all.” Chotu scowled, next time he wasn’t going to let them get the better off him. He would make sure CC and his cronies were taught a lesson.
“I still think we should tell didi.” Babli reiterated, “no good will come of keeping such things a secret.”
“Didi, please don’t say anything, you know how di..diff..” Chotu stumbled on the word, “.hard it was for Geet didi to bring us here and then for us to get into this top school. If she thinks we are in trouble already she will be so upset.”
Babli stared at Chotu hard, and then hugged him tight, making him squeal.
“OUCH!! OUCH!! stop you’re killing me!” Chotu grumbled but didn’t pull away from Babli’s embrace.
Wiping her tears away Babli grinned, “Chotu this new school has certainly made you grow up fast!”
“Didiiiiiii! I want you to top your year and I want to do really well and grow up to be just like Maan jiju. You don’t worry about CC and his gang I have a plan that will sort him out.” Chotu set his brain to work, he would definitely sort CC out…he wasn’t going to stand for his didi getting bullied at all!
