Chapter 25 – Worried distractions
Pretending to be still on the phone Maan stood up and turned his back to Geet.
“Haan, accha….hmmm..Nisha no.. no need to take any trouble. No, trouble at all…yes I do like chocolate cake….hmmm…yes you say you make the best chocolate cake in Delhi…I am sure you do.”
Frozen to a spot in the doorway of the study Geet stared at his back open mouthed.
“Yes, my wife…haan khabhi khabhi she makes it…its OK..nothing to make a song and dance about.”
Fists clenched Geet muttered a few choice words about Nisha and her chocolate cake and where she could put it!
Maan shook with suppressed laughter, he really couldn’t believe that his Mishty was lapping this up hook line and sinker.
“Ok Nisha yes I will see you tomorrow bright and early…looking forward to seeing you very much.” He made a great play of putting the phone down.
Not wanting to be caught listening Geet turned away quickly. SO! He thought her chocolate cake was just OK, had he not been licking his fingers last time she made it? This Nisha hadn’t been around for more than half a day and she was talking about making chocolate cake for HER Maan! Well two could play at that game. She would go right now and make the best chocolate cake he had ever tasted.
Maan peered from behind the door..laughter making him shake quietly. His Mishty was totally priceless, he loved her for it.
“Jiju why are laughing at didi.” Babli questioned from right behind him.
Maan turned, colour tingeing his cheeks as he was caught red handed by Babli.
“Err Babli just teasing your didi a little.” He stared down at Babli’s serious eyes. “You do know I love her very much don’t you?”
Babli nodded her head vigorously.
“Well…I am just having a little fun. Anyway looks like your didi is about to make chocolate cake for us all.”
“Chocolate cake?” Chotu came running up as he heard the magic words.
“Yes chocolate cake, but we will have it tomorrow because it will take too long now and we need to get to bed.”
“But DIDI! Chocolate cake!” Chotu frowned.
“Come on Chotu let me take you up because Babli is right, it will take ages to make it and it will be too late for you today, we can all have it tomorrow.”
Grumbling away Maan took Chotu and Babli up to get them ready for bed.
“Jiju, why do you and didi need body guards.” Babli questioned. “Are you in trouble?”
Maan sat on the bed next to her. It was no use telling Babli anything but the truth she had a very sharp brain.
“There are some people who don’t like the way Khuarana Construction does business and they are making life a little difficult so I have arranged for them, they’re just as a prevention measure really.”
“Are you worried that they will hurt Geet didi?” Chotu’s eyes looked very worried.
“I will not let anything happen to your didi. Ever. Chotu, Babli don’t worry at all I will not let you down.”
Babli and Chotu nodded, Maan jiju had always looked after Geet didi and them very well.
“OK but if you need me to box someone I am ready.” Chotu declared sitting up in bed with his little fists ready to fight and a mean expression on his face.
Babli giggled, “Chotu I think Maan jiju is happy to know he has you on his side.”
“DIDI! I mean it! I can fight real good.”
Ruffling Chotu’s hair, Maan kept a serious face, “I will definitely keep you in mind if we need help. Now off to bed you both. I better go and see what your Geet didi is up to, I hope she hasn’t demolished the kitchen.” making the children giggle.
As soon as he went off. Babli whispered to Chotu. “We had better keep a lookout for suspicious people Chotu, I think Jiju is very worried otherwise he wouldn’t have body guards or try to distract didi by teasing her.”
“I will look out for any suspicious people and box them right in the face.” Chotu growled and promptly fell asleep.
Babli lay awake for a while. If Geet didi and jiju were in danger they would have to be extra careful she decided that she would try and find out more about the people who were after them.
Maan stole down the stairs softly. Daadima had just gone to bed also so the coast was clear. Creeping up to the kitchen door he peeped in.
She was in the middle of pouring flour out into a bowl, it already looked like a bombsite he grimaced as she pulled out a whisk making a loud clatter and started whipping the eggs ferociously.
“Err Mishty what are you making at this time of night.” Maan walked in and slipped his arms around her waist.
“Maan! Let me go, I am busy.”
“But Mishty what are you making now at this time of night?”
Turning she looked at his face, he looked as if butter wouldn’t melt in his mouth.
“Maan have you finished with your conversation with Miss Nisha?”
“Nisha…hmmm yes.” he said as he brushed his lips against the silky skin at the crook of her neck.
A moan nearly broke from her as he nipped at her skin with his teeth until she remembered she was doing all this because of him. Pulling away she rounded on him “Stop that Maan!”
“Err Geet what’s the matter with you?”
“Why don’t you go and do that to NISHA!”
He stared at her trying not to laugh.
“Why would I do that?” he questioned as she added the butter and sugar with the chocolate and stared beating it vigorously.
“By the way Geet what are you making?”
“Chocolate cake.” She growled, mixing it all together and pouring it all into a cake tin.
Picking up an apple from the fruit bowl he bit into it. “Geet but why, if you eat too much cake you will get fatter.”
In the middle of putting the cake into the oven she stopped. Did he just say FATTER? Pursing her lips she shoved it in and banged the door shut. Did he think Nisha was better looking than her now?
“The cake is for you not me.”
“Err Geet I’m on a diet, I don’t want to spoil my image you know.”
HUH! He would eat Nisha’s cake but not his own biwi’s. The days events and her near death experience suddenly caught up with her. Tears formed in her eyes and made them into huge pools of shimmering amber.
Instantly Maan froze and stared. Maybe he had teased her too much, but he was trying to make her forget that she nearly died up their today. Instantly he gathered her up in his arms.
“Mishty!..I am sorry…please don’t cry. I was just teasing you. I wanted you to forget all about Singhania for a while.”
“No you weren’t You were saying how wonderful Agent Gupta is.”
“Mishty don’t you know that you are the only woman for me.” His eyes shone with love and tenderness.
Geet pushed her face into his shoulder her tears falling copiously now.
He lifted her into his arms and sat her on the kitchen counter. Mishty look at me. He could see the shock and events of the day were catching up with her.
“Maan why does he want to hurt you so badly.” She was trembling with fear.
Maan didn’t pretend to misunderstand. “I don’t know, it started with a bid that he didn’t win, perhaps he likes to win at any cost. I really thought he had died in that desert but here he is again and even more desperate.”
Her eyes widened with alarm and he knew he had said too much.
“But Mishty don’t worry, your Captain Veer Singh and Agent Gupta will look after us both. Major Saab has sent his finest.”
“But what if..”
The images of her hanging so high a handhold away from death were stamped in his brain they presented themselves at her what if.
“No. Mishty nothing will happen to you I will not let it. Now we have proper security it will be harder for him, hopefully impossible.” his eyes took in her state. It seemed that Singhania had achieved a major part of his objective, seeing Geet like this filled him with utter torment. Her ‘what if’ a testament to the fact that even she thought ultimately Singhania would win.
Pushing those thoughts aside he smiled at her, “Mishty you do look quite edible covered in chocolate, lets forget the chocolate cake I will just eat you instead.”
A small smile lit up her face. “Hmmm what about your Nisha’s chocolate cake.”
“Ummm…” he leaned in and licked off a smudge of cake batter from her cheek. “You really thought I was talking to her?”
“Weren’t you!” Wide eyed she stared at him.
“Of-course not, would I dare to talk to any other woman when my shernie is standing at the door listening in…”
“Yes me.me.”he grinned at her. “Mishty didn’t I prove to you last night how much I love you?”
Pink tinged her cheeks.
Lifting her off the kitchen counter flour and all he strode with her out of the kitchen and up the stairs. “I think maybe I didn’t do a very good job it seems that you doubted me so readily.”
“Maan where are you taking me! The cake!”
Maan spied Nakul going towards the kitchen as he rapidly mounted the stairs with Geet in his arms.
“Nakul! Go and have some chocolate cake, it should be ready by now, but save some for Chotu and Babli!”
“Chocolate cake? Mere liye really!” Nakul beamed.
“But I made it for you!”
“I already have my dessert and am just about to enjoy it thoroughly.” he muttered entering their bedroom and firmly shutting the door behind him.
