“Well!” Mrs Chaddha stood watching Maan stride to Major Saab’s car and get in. “I didn’t see that happening!”
“Neither did I.” Geet muttered still shaken up by the recent events. Maan had never ever left her alone like that in the middle of nowhere with instructions to get herself home.
“I will check the cards tonight Geet dear- you don’t worry, see what’s in store for you.” Concerned as she saw how valiantly Geet was holding back her tears.
“No….. Mrs Chaddha thank you-,” Geet reached around and hugged her, “you have been amazing! Without you I don’t think we could have caught Singhania so quickly and saved Maan. I…we cant thank you enough.” Blinking back her tears she smiled.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed myself, with you all. You are all my dear friends, I want to you to come and visit me whenever you can.”
“And your friends are definitely our friends.” Adi laughed as a chicken clucked happily at his feet.
“Yes my chickens are wonderful aren’t they? I am sure Molly will take these three under her wing so to speak.”she laughed making Pinky giggle.
Geet’s tummy grumbled loudly, “err I better go home and tell Daadima and the children the good news.” she said without much enthusiasm. Maan’s anger had her completely thrown she didn’t know what to expect from him now.
“And yes Adi if you can find me a taxi I will get going too, Molly and the rest will be wandering where I am.”
“We can take you home..” Adi replied mindful of Maan sir’s instructions.
“Arey nahi Adi you go and take Pinky for a big burger I think she needs to eat after all this excitement.!
“No… no I am fine.” Pinky replied quickly even as her tummy rumbled. Making Mrs Chaddha and Adi laugh, but Geet was still in her own world her eyes clouded with worry.
“Nahi I will manage, its such a long way back you will get stranded again.”
Mr Bhoot sprang to Adi’s mind and he paled. “Err ok if you really think you will fine Mrs Chaddha?”
“Yes yes…chalo lets find a taxi that will take me home.” Mrs Chaddha swept up the chickens in her arms.
“Mrs Chaddha let me pay your fare at least.” Geet offered pulling out some money.
“Areyyy beti nahi! I can manage to pay my way home. Now off you go. Your Maan will already be thinking and worrying that he left you alone.”
“Not this time. This time he is really angry at me.” Chewing her lip with worry.
“I am sure he will come around, I have never seen a couple that were so well matched.”
Goodbyes were said and Adi and Pinky escorted Mrs Chaddha back to the main road to look for a taxi. Geet too walked towards the main road but in the other direction as finding a taxi from the other side would be going in the right direction for home.
As she walked she rang home. “Daadima I will be home soon, we errr caught Singhania.”
“Geet beta that is very good news indeed. Well done! Is Maan with you?” Excited, daadima wanted to congratulate them both. “Where are you?”
“ Patel Nagar. No…he went to file a report with Major Saab, they went to see the ACP.”
“And he left you there alone? Puzzled daadima questioned….Maan never left her alone like that before.”and Geet beta why do you sound so forlorn?”
Geet blinked back her tears, Daadima was so astute, nothing got past her sharp brain. “Err its nothing.”
“Has Maan said something to you?” Daadima questioned further. “I know he can be quite curt when he is angry, but you know by now he doesn’t mean it.”
“No..its not that Daadima…this time he really is very angry with me. He thinks I don’t trust him.” It tumbled out of her.
What had happened now between them that had made Maan so mad? Daadima chewed over that for a few seconds. “Geet beta, it must be because he was worried about you.”
“Perhaps…but I was only trying to protect him.” she added with conviction. Geet decided what she had done was right, he probably would have done the same if he was in her place.
A smile broke out on daadima’s face. “Just come home beti, I am sure by the time he comes back home he will have calmed down. After all you have just managed to catch Singhania!”
“I hope so.”
At police HQ….
Maan sat listening to Major Saab and the ACP putting all the details together on the report but not hearing. Even the euphoria that he should have been feeling at having finally caught Singhania the man that he had been after for years didn’t kick in. What WAS the matter with him?
He knew what the matter was. His lips pursed tightly as he quietly fumed. He should be happy…he should be ecstatic but all he could think about was Geet’s mistrust of him. She didn’t trust him to protect her.
How she had kept the detail of the mobile phone hidden from. If she had kept such a huge thing hidden from him, what else had she kept hidden. His brain filled with red mist. Flashes of the times he had run after her when she hadn’t told him her whereabouts or the fact that she had run into trouble filled his mind. His thoughts brewed and grew into dark beasts that refused to dissipate.
He’d had it with her running head first into trouble ALL the time. He was the boss of this marriage. He was going to tell her from now on their relationship would be by his rules or NOT AT ALL.
